67 families to download

Free and open source Thai fonts

An open collection of 71 Thai font families, each kept with its licence. 67 come as the original files their makers published, one zip per family or one bundle per source; the rest are listed with a link to their official source.

What the collection is

The collection gathers Thai typefaces whose licences let anyone use them free of charge, and keeps each one with its licence. Today it lists 71 families. 67 of them can be downloaded here as the original files, each zip with the licence text and a README that records where the files came from and a checksum for every file. The rest are listed with a link to their official source, because their terms do not let us pass the files on.

Every family has its own page with a live specimen, all 44 consonants and the other Thai characters, its styles, its licence in plain words and the code to use it on a website. You can also compare them side by side in the font tester and on the font poster.

How we check licences

  • The files and the licence must agree. We read the licence that ships with each family and the licence record inside each font file.
  • Anyone must be allowed to pass the files on. If a licence gives that right only to named organisations, or we cannot confirm it, the family is listed with a link and no download.
  • Conditions on changes are followed. Where a licence restricts changes or reserves a name, the previews here use the original files unchanged rather than a reduced web copy.
  • Every file is traceable. We record the upstream release or commit each file came from, with a SHA-256 checksum, and the downloads hold the upstream files byte for byte.
  • Source comes with the GPL fonts. For the fonts from the Thai Linux Working Group we offer the source package next to the downloads.

This is our reading of each licence, offered to help you choose, not legal advice. The full texts are on the licences page.

Each archive holds every downloadable family from one source, each in its own folder with the original files, the licence text and the README, exactly as in that family's own zip. 5 archives, 25.1 MB in all.

DIP/SIPA national fonts 14 families

The national fonts released by the Department of Intellectual Property and the Software Industry Promotion Agency, hosted exactly as published with their bilingual licence. TH Sarabun New carries the GPL with the font exception, and the three fonts under the Charmonman notice are listed as links.

NECTEC and the Thai Linux Working Group 16 families

The fonts-tlwg 0.7.4 release from the Thai Linux Working Group, including fonts first made at NECTEC, and the three Arundina families from fonts-arundina 0.4.0. The GPL fonts come with their source package.

4 families are in the collection without a download. The three TH fonts under the Charmonman notice, TH Charm of AU, TH Charmonman and TH Srisakdi, are listed but not distributed, because their notice gives the right to distribute them to DIP and SIPA only. Google Sans is listed the same way: its trademark notice ties the name to the original files, which are too large for a web preview. Each has a page with its letters, its licence and a link to its official source.

Changelog

What has changed

  1. Six families added

Boon, BoonJot and BoonTook from FontUni, LINE Seed Sans TH from LY Corporation, Lunvon, and Samphan Condensed join the collection, each with its original files and licence text to download. Samphan Condensed is the first family here under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. Where a publisher gives a Thai name for a family, the family page and card now show it under the English name.

    6 families added

Boon, BoonJot, BoonTook, LINE Seed Sans TH, Lunvon, Samphan Condensed

  2. The collection relaunches with 65 families

memorablepress.com reopened as an independent reference with 65 Thai font families. 61 of them come with their original files and licence texts to download. TH Charm of AU, TH Charmonman, TH Srisakdi and Google Sans are listed with a link to their official source, because their terms do not let us pass the files on.

Questions people ask

Can I use these fonts in commercial work?

Every family you can download here allows use in commercial work, including print, logos, apps and websites. None of the licences lets you sell the font files on their own, and some put conditions on changing a font. Each family page sums up its licence in plain words, and the licences page compares them.

Why are the bundles grouped by source?

Fonts from one source share an origin and usually a licence, so a bundle keeps like with like and its README can name the licence of every family inside. Each family keeps its own folder with its licence text, exactly as in its single download.

Do I have to credit the font makers?

Using a font in a design, a document or a website does not require a credit under any of these licences. If you pass the font files themselves on, keep the copyright notice and licence text with them, as every download here already does.

How do I know when the collection changes?

Every addition, removal or correction to the collection is recorded in the changelog on this page, with the date and the families it touches.
