How it sounds

An aspirated ch, the high-class partner of ช.

It does not close syllables in ordinary spelling. The Royal Institute’s romanisation table still gives t for the rare case.

2 other letters have the same sound at the start of a syllable: ช cho chang (low), ฌ cho choe (low).

Class and tone

With no mark, a high-class letter gives a rising tone in a live syllable and a low tone in a dead one. Mai ek gives low and mai tho falling; the other two marks are not used.
